CST462 – Summary

Overall, my service learning experience went well, especially in terms of gaining real hands-on skills and contributing meaningful work. I was able to log over 30 hours and complete a variety of tasks like updating website pages, improving layout consistency, and building new sections, which gave me practical experience beyond the classroom . One of the best parts was having creative freedom while still working toward real goals, which made the work feel both productive and engaging.

If I could improve something, it would be my efficiency and familiarity with the tools earlier on. A lot of time was spent learning WordPress and figuring out how to implement certain features, which slowed progress at times. Getting access to resources earlier and planning tasks more clearly would also help avoid delays.

The most impactful part of this experience was the real-world exposure. Working on an actual website, collaborating with a team, and getting feedback made everything feel more meaningful than typical assignments. It helped me understand how development and design work happens in a real environment.

Some challenges I faced included the learning curve with new tools, managing time when tasks took longer than expected, and occasional delays in communication or resources. However, these challenges also helped me grow and become more independent in problem-solving.

For future service learning students, my advice would be to start learning the required tools early, ask for access to everything you might need right away, and stay consistent with progress even if tasks feel slow at first. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions and communicate with your team, it makes everything smoother.
